The Pre-Master's program provides training in English for academic purposes, enhances your study skills for graduate level coursework and gives you an orientation into the US university system.


Students also take courses relevant to their area of study for which they receive undergraduate credit.

The Pre-Master's Program is designed for international students who want to complete their Master's degree in the US but have too low English proficiency for direct entry to a Master with
  • a TOEFL below 80 or IELTS below 6.5
  • no official TOEFL or IELTS score
  • or who have not taken the GRE or GMAT


    The intensive instruction in different English skills such as speaking, presenting in professional environments, and learning through case studies will ideally prepare you to enter into one of the many Master programs offered at the University of Maine:

  • With the University of Maine's International Year One you can get your English skills up to speed in either the Business or the Engineering and sciences pathway to then choose between over 20 Bachelor programs


    In the Pre-Master's Program you train your English, your academic skills, and prepare for English tests and the GMAT or GRE.


    The International Year One program provides training in English as well as your academic, and study skills, enabling you to earn up to 31 academic credits.


    Afterwards you can directly move on into the second year of undergraduate coursework in one of more than 20 bachelor's degrees in the fields of business, economics, engineering, environmental sciences, food sciences, education and social sciences programs.


    You can choose between two academic pathways

  • a Business pathway or

  • an Engineering, Physical/Natural Sciences and Forestry pathway


    It will save you time and give you the right preparation without taking ESL courses or English language tests
