A solid business education features lessons learned both in the classroom and out in the real business world. Though there are top-notch business schools in all parts of the US, not all areas of the country are created equal. When applying to school for business, be sure to expand your research into the surrounding city or region to get a sense of what opportunities are available.

International students seeking a business degree should not only consider which schools to apply to, but also where in the US to study business. Below are some of the major business regions of the US. Some you may expect, and others may be a surprise.

New York City

New York City and its surrounding areas are probably the most obvious and well-known places for obtaining a business degree. Filled with endless culture, opportunities on every block, and a wealth of resources, New York City feels like the center of the business world- and in many ways it is. New York City is home to the big financial markets such as the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. New York City is also well-positioned to include a global element in your business education. Home of the United Nations, New York City contains a diversity of people, a diversity of ideas, and a diversity of business models. International students would have a hard time finding a better place to study international business. In terms of classroom education, there are dozens of high-quality colleges and universities in and near New York City, such as Adelphi University, New York University and Felician University, where students can earn their degree in business.

Texas

The second largest state in the US is one of the biggest business hotspots in the country. Texas is consistently rated as one of the top states to start a business or even work in a business. Austin in particular is a booming city where young businesspeople mingle with a variety of arts and culture to create an energetic hotbed for innovation. Seen as one of the nation's premier technology hubs, the Austin-Houston-Dallas triangle offers immense opportunities to augment a classroom business education. Students interested in earning a business degree in the Lone Star State should take a look at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of North Texas, and the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, which features the highly regarded Center for International Business Studies.

Chicago

Chicago is another major US city that international students should consider when thinking about where to study business. In many ways Chicago, the hub of America's heartland, is just as potent as New York City in terms of its culture, amenities, and its business opportunities. It is the second largest financial center in the US and features dozens of consulting and commodity firms. Potential business students can choose from the Quinlan School of Business at Loyola University Chicago, the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, among many others in the region.

North Carolina

Though the Appalachian region of the US may not be the first to come to mind when considering where to study business, North Carolina is a great area to study for those who may not want the hustle and bustle of the big cities. One of the first things people notice about North Carolina is the gorgeous weather; it truly is a place where you get the best of all seasons. In terms of its business qualifications, North Carolina is home to large sections of the banking industry and Research Triangle Park, one of the largest business, technology, and government research centers in the country with over 170 companies represented. North Carolina schools make the most of this close proximity to the research sector. Potential business students who find the mid-Atlantic region appealing should check out Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, and the Poole School of Management at North Carolina State University.

Northern California

International students looking to go into the technology industry with their business degree should definitely consider schools in the northern California Bay Area. Home of world-famous Silicon Valley and its hundreds of technology and biotechnology companies, the Bay Area is continually on the cutting edge of business. In addition to technology, the hospitality industry is also prominent in the Bay Area. Like its east coast cousins, San Francisco has established itself as a global city, becoming a major hub of Chinese and other Asian businesses. Students who wish to study business in the Bay Area have a number of excellent institutions to choose from, including the University of San Francisco , Stanford University, and the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley. Even the prestigious Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania has a campus in San Francisco!
