A Few Items To Look Back on In 2021

From the inauguration of President Joe Biden to the continuation of the spread of COVID-19 variants worldwide, 2021 was another year that will be discussed for years to come. Although society around the globe faced many of the same hardships as in 2020, it was also a very promising year for international education as many international students returned to in-person classes on college and university campuses across the United States. And, 2022 shows even more potential for growth as aspiring international students who have had their plans delayed will likely be enrolling in big numbers in the months to come. But before we dive into 2022, take a look at some of the key moments from 2021.

Don’t Just Walk Into the New Year- Leap!

We’re all familiar with some New Year’s traditions like a kiss at midnight and resolutions, but we were intrigued when we discovered these traditions from around the world that some take part in, and we wanted to share them with you. The number of traditions to ring in the new year are endless, and each just as interesting! If you’re looking for a new tradition this year, explore borrowing one from our list. Have a favorite that we missed? Please share!

  • Denmark: Jump off a chair at midnight for good luck
  • Greece: Hang onions by the door to welcome rebirth and growth
  • Switzerland: Drop cream on the floor New Year's day for good luck
  • Philippines: Focus on circles such as by eating an orange or wearing polka dots for prosperity
  • Turkey: Sprinkle salt on your doorstep at midnight to bring peace

New Year’s Traditions Around our Office

As a bonus, here are a few traditions from some of our team members!

Greg: “We make a traditional southern style NYE dish of cornbread, collard greens, pork and black-eyed peas every year. Always. This southern tradition is said to bring good luck, prosperity and fortune for the year to come.”

Connor: “My mom usually cooks black eyed peas for good luck, but I don't like them so I typically don't eat them. However, we also all enjoy watching fireworks together.”

Ashley: “We always feasted on Chinese carry-out as a kid. It hasn't happened in years but it was always a tradition growing up.”
