Our judging panel for 2010 has some new faces, as we've added two previous winners to the panel. Both Sandy (2009) and Matt (2006) have entertained us with their videos and blogs, and we are delighted to add their voices to our panel. Jim and Markus return as the experienced pros, having watched dozens of videos over three years. They have contributed greatly to this contest and are very well regarded in the field of international education. Whether new to the panel or returning veterans, our judges share a deep commitment to the field of international education, willingness to give of their time and energy, and a true enjoyment of the contest. Together with the staff of InternationalStudent.com, these judges will be reviewing your video entry and selecting the winners. Welcome new and returning judges, and thank you!
Markus Laitinen has been involved in international education for 18 years, currently serving as the Head of International Affairs for the University of Helsinki. In this role, he is responsible for the strategic planning and coordination of international affairs, and he participates in the development of the university’s main strategic documents. Markus is also the secretary for the International Committee, and is the University’s liaison towards European education networks (LERU, Utrecht, UNICA and Europaeum). He is very active in international education, including as a board member for several international education groups and a project manager for the Finnish Universities Rectors’ Council. Markus speaks five languages and has a Masters in Social Sciences from the University of Helsinki.
Matt Brattin discovered InternationalStudent.com in 2006 while searching for scholarship money to help fund his international MBA. He had recently been accepted to attend ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain when he stumbled across the first annual video travel contest and decided to give it a shot. He’s glad he did, because his entry earned him the grand prize which he gleefully accepted to help fund his trip abroad. Since graduating from ESADE in mid-2007 Matt has been working as a corporate Financial Analyst in the travel industry and credits his international experience for helping him land such a great gig.
Jim Crawley has 18 years of experience in university admissions, 14 of which have been spent in international recruitment. For many of those years, he worked closely with international students at Grand Valley State University as Director of International Student Services. Currently, Jim is putting his international education experience to work for ELS. He has traveled to over 25 countries and is an avid amateur photographer. He has also reviewed films at a high school film festival. Jim is the moderator of the “Ask a U.S. Advisor” forum on InternationalStudent.com, and he is pleased to again be one of the judges of the travel video contest.
Sandy Florez is the winner of International Student's 2009 travel video contest. In the summer of 2010, she traveled to Italy, Greece, Spain, Morocco and France (she kept a blog about it, too!). On her spare time, Sandy enjoys writing a variety of different drafts for her future New York Times best seller all while finding ways to escape the suburbs of Miami (see: Internet video contests). When she isn’t plotting or talking in third person, Sandy is busy finishing her last year as a journalism and English literature student at the University of Miami.
