Through the University of Dayton's Intensive English Program, you'll benefit from a concentrated and intense language program combined with a true American university experience. Receive your introduction to U.S. American culture and develop strong English language skills, preparing you for the university classroom or the work place.
The Intensive English Program offers five 7-week terms of study per academic year. The IEP serves both full-time and part-time students with proficiencies ranging from true beginner to high intermediate/advanced levels. Full-time students receive 21 hours of instruction per week addressing a complete range of language skills including reading and vocabulary development, writing and grammar, and oral communication. Enrichment courses that complement the curriculum at each level are also included, and an academic listening and note-taking instruction is included at the top levels. IEP classes are non-credit bearing.
Our program aims to create opportunities for continuous engagement between international and domestic students in order to facilitate language and intercultural development. As part of this effort, we offer multiple sessions of Conversation Groups each week along with special events and course collaborations. Our students are part of the tapestry of campus life as they attend classes on the main campus.
The University of Dayton offers conditional admission options for both undergraduate and graduate international students who are developing their English language skills. Successful completion of the IEP is one pathway for full admission.
The Intensive English Program welcomes a diverse community of international learners to prepare them for success in their academic careers by providing English language instruction rooted in best practices. IEP’s diverse team of TESOL professionals guides students toward autonomy as they learn, explore, and practice the habits necessary for success in U.S. higher education. Together with University academic departments, IEP creates and facilitates opportunities for intercultural exchange.

I am a Ph.D. student in the electro-optics program at the University of Dayton. I have been at UD for two and a half years, and feel comfortable studying and living here.
I decided to study in the USA when I was a freshman. The higher educational quality and better research capabilities attracted me to study in the USA. I decided to come to UD because the electro-optics program is strong in academic research. The quiet and beautiful small town where the school is located also attracted me.
I have made a lot of friends here at UD, and some are like family members to me. People here are all kind enough to support each other and take care of each other.
It's not an easy decision for anybody to study abroad. Choose the University of Dayton to warm you up with the light from the whole UD family.
I am from Nanjing University of Science and Technology, where I majored in electrical and computational engineering. This is my first year at the University of Dayton, and I am still excited about being able to study here.
As an engineering student, I was especially attracted to the extraordinary advanced technologies in the US. Having the chance to study these technologies is a dream to me. I was motivated to gain comprehensive knowledge and practical skills, so I applied to the master's program in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Dayton.
With top scholars and advanced facilities – including 10 specialized laboratories – students here experience great enhancement in our academic ability, and we gain both theoretical and hands-on training. This enhancement can lead to good job opportunities in the future.
It’s not easy to step out the protection of our parents and face the challenge of living in a new country alone. But this is also a great opportunity for us to be stronger and better. Besides, we are never alone here. The University of Dayton is a big family who supports each other. We can find lifelong friends.
After I graduated from middle school, I decided I wanted to earn my master’s degree in the United States, and I finally decided to achieve my dream. I wanted to become a successful engineer, and the United States and especially the University of Dayton became the primary choice to help me excel in this field. I am really grateful to my parents who stood by me in all my dream and endeavors; it is because of them I am here.
I chose UD because the professors are experienced and friendly. UD also provides the infrastructure and has a dedicated research institute for students to work on their projects. And UD is one of the top-ranked universities in the U.S. The campus is one of the safest and most student-friendly.
I had the same jitters every other international student has when they leave their country for higher education. But the fears were gone within a matter of days, and ever since then I feel like I am at my home. The students and faculty always have a smile on their face, which brightens the day and helps to get rid of any stress. I participate the international club events and other campus events, which helped me make lot of friends. My stay in the U.S. is an unforgettable one.
My on-campus job is another addition to the long list of things I love about UD. I get to meet new people every single day, and the job is interesting and challenging. The friends I have and the campus events are what I love the most about UD. The biggest surprise for me was that in short time I made so many friends, and I will never ever regret my decision to join UD. I will remain a Flyer forever.
