Founded as Little Rock Junior College in 1926, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) is Arkansas’s premier metropolitan university. UALR is committed to responding to the needs of the community by creating active links between the campus, community and commerce. As a metropolitan campus, the university serves a different kind of student – about half are balancing families, careers and school. UALR is able to put its students in close contact with the state’s most influential leaders in government, business, industry, medicine and information technology because of its location in Arkansas’s capital city.

UALR offers more than 140 programs of study through six colleges and the William H. Bowen School of Law. This includes 10 doctoral programs, 45 master’s degrees, 23 graduate certificates, two professional degrees, 57 baccalaureate degrees, and four undergraduate certificate programs. UALR offers roughly 400 online courses ─ more than any public college or university in Arkansas.

With a student body comprised of traditional and non-traditional populations that reflect ethnic, racial, and socio-economic diversity, UALR attracts students from all over Arkansas, 43 other states and 75 foreign countries.

For the past three years, the university has enrolled more than 13,000 students, a notable accomplishment after raising admission standards twice during this time period. The new standards have helped the university raise its average ACT score of entering students by three points and raise its graduation rate. In spring 2010, UALR awarded a record 2,132 diplomas to 2,036 students.

UALR opened a new $35 million Engineering and Information Technology building in fall 2010, starting a wave of new construction growth that includes a $23.3 million residence hall that opened in fall 2011 and a student services one-stop center that opens in spring 2012. The nursing and health sciences facilities will be renovated in 2012.

UALR launched its first comprehensive fundraising campaign in 2005 and, despite the challenging economic climate, reached its $75 million goal a-year-and-half early. That goal has been extended to $100 million, which is close to completion.
