The New School for Public Engagement

The mission of The New School for Public Engagement is to create and nurture a learning community marked by interdisciplinary engagement with real-world issues and the integration of professional, civic, and liberal learning.

Every kid dreams of making a difference in the world. Few people feel like they have accomplished this goal. With an education at The New School for Public Engagement, however, they instill the tools, education, focus, and resources needed to make this dream a reality. With five schools committed to this philosophy:

  • School of Undergraduate Studies
  • Milano School of International Affairs
  • School of Media Studies
  • School of Writing
  • School of Language Learning and Teaching

Students can find a variety of unique opportunities that are designed to meet their academic, professional, and civic aspirations all at the same time. This is especially important in the classroom where curricula are designed to be collaborative, integrative, and boundary-crossing.

No one said that solving the world’s problems is easy. But real-world practice is the key, where theories come alive through practical training and where students are given the tools to confront contemporary challenges in their communities and throughout the world. At the New School for Public Engagement, international students can pursue both undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as advance their degree by earning a certificate or enrolling in continuing education courses.

And what better place to do this than in New York City – where culture, diversity, and religion come together in a bustling city full of opportunities both academically and socially. Here, The New School maintains its tradition of educational innovation and keeps its place on the cutting edge of the intellectual and creative life.

So now you may be asking yourself, how do I get started? Request information by completing the form above with your contact details and the New School will contact you directly about how you can make your difference.

School of Writing

The School of Writing offers students at all levels of experience the opportunity to study the craft of writing under the direction of master teachers who are themselves distinguished practitioners. The approach emphasizes the study of literature as a dynamic artistic discipline, a creative activity, rather than as a field for historical analysis or an object for interpretation, as in English, literary studies, or comparative literature departments. In their workshops and seminars, New School writing teachers approach works of art from the inside out, moving from close attention to language, craft, and form into history and culture, engaging the full complexity of a work, and resisting critical narrowness, insularity, and reductionism.

  • Creative Writing (MFA)
  • Summer Writers Colony
  • Riggio Honors Program: Writing & Democracy
