Scholarships

As an international student at MTSU, there are scholarships available for you if you are in need of funds. MTSU offers the International Merit Scholarship (IMS) for international students. These scholarships are based entirely on GPA. A GPA of 3.25-3.49 corresponds with $4,000 of scholarship money, a GPA of 3.50-3.74 corresponds with $8,000 of scholarship money, and a GPA of 3.75-4.0 corresponds with $16,000 of scholarship money.

You do not need to apply for the IMS, as you are automatically eligible once you are admitted. This means that if you are an international student with a GPA higher than 3.75, you are automatically guaranteed $16,000 dollars of scholarship money once you are accepted to MTSU!

Location

Often described as a “hidden gem” by its students or by anyone who happens to pass by, MTSU is located in the beautiful and historic town of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Murfreesboro is home to a number of historic sites, such as mansions and battlefields from the American Civil War, along with beautiful nature, such as the Murfree Springs, the Stone River, which runs through the center of the town, and miles of beautiful, mountainous forest. Murfreesboro is a college town, and there are lots of amazing restaurants and breweries like the Alley on Main, the Mayday Brewery, and the Hot Springs Beer Park, along with educational, cultural, and recreational centers like the Center for the Arts, the Miracle Field, and the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring. Murfreesboro is only about 40 minutes south of Nashville, which is the state’s capital, the music capital of the US, and a cultural hub of the American South, so you aren’t far from a big city and if you want to get away for a weekend or so. You are also right in the heart of all kinds of great outdoor adventure opportunities, like whitewater kayaking, overnight hiking, mountain biking, and more.

Student Life

As a student at MTSU, you will have a wide variety of things to do with your time, along with a number of resources available to make your experience easier and more fulfilling. The athletic programs at MTSU are some of the best in the state for both players and fans. If you are a football fan, you'll have a great time at MTSU, as the MTSU Blue Raiders have a fanbase all across the country. Being able to watch a football game in person that many people would take time out of their day to watch on TV is a privilege for any sports fan. In addition to this, the campus is equipped with fitness and recreation centers that are available for all students, including indoor and outdoor tracks, volleyball courts, weight rooms, basketball courts, an aerobic room, indoor and outdoor pools, an indoor soccer arena, racquetball courts, a cycle studio, and more. MTSU is also home to more than 300 clubs and social organizations, so every student will likely be able to find communities of people who share some of their interests. These clubs host events, so students are given access to an MTSU event calendar that shows social events, scheduled activities, sports games, and more throughout the year.

COVID-19 Response

Like most colleges and universities, MTSU has had to adapt tremendously due to the coronavirus pandemic, but, thankfully, the administration has come up with a plan to return to campus. The plan involves four priorities: protecting the campus community’s health and welfare, monitoring the appropriate health/emergency organizations and University governing agencies for information, guidance, directives, and program implications, and communicating consistently and effectively with the campus community. To learn more, read the official plan here.

Student Testimonials

“I didn’t experience culture shock coming to MTSU, due to the United States’ influence on The Bahamas, but those who are in fear that they will, should not worry. MTSU offers a lot of opportunities that can help you bridge this cultural gap, and in turn, make new friends. I took advantage of this and joined clubs like Gamma Iota Sigma where I am the Diversity & Inclusion Officer, Student Society for International Education, Bahamian Student Organization, Lambda Sigma Honor Society, and many others. The International Office also promotes an event called Conversation Partners, which allows you to interact with other international students and as a bonus get free food. Through this, I was given the opportunity to be assigned to an American family, which was a great experience, and would be great for those who feel homesick or are scared to leave their family. “

-Mark Darling, International Student Ambassador from The Bahamas

“I can confidently say you will never meet a staff as supportive and patient as the MTSU staff.”

-Jordan F. Pufon, International Student Ambassador from Cameroon
