UNC Charlotte is located in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is part of a metropolitan area that dominates the Central Carolinas region. Charlotte has grown rapidly over the past two decades and is currently the 15th largest city and 2nd largest financial center in the United States. UNC Charlotte’s campus is only 14 kilometers away from the city center. With two light rail stops directly on main campus, internships with industry leaders are easily accessible. Currently, there are more than 200 “Fortune 500” companies located in the city. As a testament to that impressive figure, Forbes has ranked Charlotte as the 7th best place to conduct business and have a career in the United States.

Charlotte also has numerous options for recreation that include cultural celebrations throughout the year, restaurants with international cuisine, sporting events for Charlotte’s many professional athletic teams including the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets, racing at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, concerts from world-famous performers, and Broadway productions at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Students are also encouraged to spend a day in the life of a race car driver and their crew at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, learn how ride the rapids from national experts at the U.S. National Whitewater Center, and take an adrenalin-filled trip to Carowinds, which is one of the most expansive amusement parks in the southeastern United States.

Student/Campus Life

UNC Charlotte is home to more than 400 student clubs and organizations, from which about 100 have multicultural and international focus. You can become a part of an honors society, student government, or Greek life, and participate in nearly any other activity that you can think of! The University has ample resources to engage students outside of their standard course of study.

The newly-built University Recreation Center just opened its doors in 2020 and features indoor and outdoor swimming pools, several floors of fitness equipment for strength training and conditioning, tennis courts, a yoga area, and even a cooking space!

In UNC Charlotte’s expansive library, you can access literature on any topic, view exhibits that contain artifacts from all over the world ranging from the bronze age to modernity, play the latest video games, or use 3-D printers and laser cutters for academic and personal purposes.

Students will also have an opportunity to cheer on the UNC Charlotte “49ers” Division I athletic teams against their Conference USA foes and national rivals!

International Student Support Services

UNC Charlotte’s students come from 105 different countries. With this incredible network of diversity driving student achievement, the University promotes culturally-inclusive and safe environments on campus. Transitioning to full-time studies at UNC Charlotte begins with the Office of Admissions, where all counselors are trained to advise international students. Once accepted, our International Student and Scholar Office (ISSO) will hold an international orientation upon arrival to campus and assist with cross-cultural and immigration issues throughout a student’s studies. We’ll be right there with you, every step of the way.

Our English Language Training Institute (ELTI) holds fun and interactive classes for students, who need to strengthen their English language skills prior to beginning their degree program. Other offices include the Writing Resource Center (WRC) to improve English writing skills, the Counseling Center to support students who are homesick or experience “culture shock”, and the Career Center, which facilitates pathways to employment and occupation exploration.

There are many international student clubs at UNC Charlotte, too. You can connect with students from your home country and participate in the annual International Festival on campus that features food, games, cultural attire, and exhilarating performances. This festival attracts tens of thousands of local residents each year! International students who plan to live on campus can stay in the Witherspoon International House where they can share their culture with other international and local students in a fun, inclusive, non-academic environment.

COVID-19 Response

In light of current issues associated with COVID-19, UNC Charlotte has implemented several measures to support international students throughout the application process to the University:

  • Upon request, deferral of admission is available from the fall to spring semester with classes starting in January;
  • Duolingo English Test, TOEFL IBT Special Home Edition, and IELTS Indicator are now accepted as a proof of English Proficiency if test centers in your hometown are closed;
  • Official transcripts are now required for enrollment instead of acceptance if schools are not able to issue original documentation;
  • Live virtual information sessions are conducted on a regular basis, please visit undergraduate or graduate admissions websites for the schedule;
  • Virtual Open House videos are posted on the Office of Admission’s website to convey additional information about the University and available programs;
  • Depending on the program, students have an option to take distance education classes during fall if desired;
  • Student orientation has moved to a virtual platform;
  • I-20 forms are now being emailed to students who plan to study at UNC Charlotte with an F-1 international student visa;
  • The fall 2020 semester will begin on September 7, which will help facilitate the successful travel of international students to campus, and;
  • All University academic and support offices are operating under normal business hours and are available to assist students by e-mail or phone.
