Dorms vs. Off Campus Housing

Posted on March 25th, 2011 by Caitlin Collom

Hello Everyone,

Quick update:  I’m still waiting to hear about getting some loans.  I emailed Aberdeen and they are not going to look at loan entitlements until the end of April.  Guess I have to be patient.  As soon as I do find out about loans I have found a place to stay with a friend of mine for free!  I’ll be able to save a ton of money that way!!

I’m beginning to look into housing options to give me an idea of how much money I need to have saved.  I am curious about your opinions on whether a dorm or an apartment is better.  I have been doing some research and there are negatives and positives for both.

Positives:  1. Less worry because I’ll have guaranteed housing before I leave the US.  2. Good location-on campus! 3. Opportunity to socialize with other students in dorms 4. Convienent.

Negatives: 1. Expensive- average of 120 GBP a week! (=480 GBP) not including food.  2. Possibly having to share bath facilities depending on location.

Positive: 1. Less expensive?  (If my friend comes with we can split a two bedroom fully furnished apartment which they avg to about 250-350 GBP a month per person).  2. Privacy.

Negatives: 1. Unknown amount for bills (electricity, internet, food, dishes, etc).  2.  No guaranteed place to live before I leave the US most likely (unless I can find a landlord to rent  place to me  without checking it out in person first).  3.  Not familiar with the area and will have to find a place based on limited knowledge.

I would love to hear feedback!

Hope all is well with everyone!

hey! I just found your blog and it is really interesting to me, because I want to study in Aberdeen too. I’m 16 and I live in Mexico, but I used to live there, it’s such a nice place, you’ll love it. I am not sure about the cost of flats there, but my dad went to the university of Aberdeen and we found a nice flat near the campus and I think it wasn’t that expensive.. try looking for flats in Woodside and Hilton when you go there. I’m sorry if I don’t have a lot of information about it, I lived there when I was in 8th grade 🙂 good luck!

Hi! I have to say I prefered living in an apartment last year off campus, but whether you enjoy this will be very dependent on who you get to live with. One of my flatmates from last year is in Berlin at the moment in a 2-person apartment (becuase they don’t have any campus housing there). She doesn’t really get along too well with her flatmate and the flat is about 45 minutes the wrong side of town, so she is a little depressed about that at the moment. This was all arranged sight unseen, so its a chance you take.

In our flat in Edinburgh last year, the bills didn’t add a lot to the overall cost. You can apply to be expemt from Council Tax because you are a student, and this has the knock on effort of meaning that water is free. (Split between 4) Electricity and gas came to about £35 each a quarter and the phone/internet bill was £5 each a month.

Campus housing can be a lot of fun, but again it depends if you are going to be living with people that are a suitable age group for you, or a load of rowdy first years. It will make your first few weeks a lot more enjoyable as you’ll be at the centre of everything and so you won’t be missing out on any events/trips/etc that they arrange.

Try for self catering if you can. It’s cheaper, it gives you a lot more flexibility, and the food is relatively inexpensive back home (compared with California at any rate).

I have a school friend who is studying in Aberdeen at the moment, if you want I could ask him for his recommendations?

    Hope you’re keeping well!
    All the best,

The International Education Consortium has begun its annual survey to assess the status of the current group of International graduate students coming to the US. The survey reviews the process by which the students selected US Universities, why they decided to attend school in the US, the application process, the matriculation process and their overall satisfaction. The IEC hopes to use this information to better inform the policy-makers on how to improve the quality and expand the quantity of good foreign students in our Universities.

For security try the cheap Hillhead Flats in Aberdeen, you pay between 60 and 75 pounds for a small room, shared bathroom but you get to meet a lot of people and are 15 minutes walk from campus ( and a Lidl is close by, very important and cheap)

I would go for the dorms – the social aspects of living in a student residence is ideal for university life. Maybe consider moving into a house in your later years 🙂

La terrasse dotée d’une vue magnifique ainsi que le patio arboré contribuent a la magie des lieux. Très bonne cuisine…le thé à la menthe servi avec d’excellentes pâtisseries maisons!
